How to Setting Compass on Nokia N97
Nokia N97 has an internal compass is used to improve accuracy of determining the azimuth and helps the default mapping applications to automatically orients any map to the direction you are facing. Such compass can determine how a user is turned toward north direction. With geographical coordinates of a target point, the device itself (fixed by satellite navigation) and direction in which the user is turned, the device can determine direction in which the user should go.
Magnetic compass also reacts immediately to changes of direction when the user is walking. To check the status of the compass, go to the Maps view. In the right corner you can see the compass indicator.
The compass should always be properly calibrated. To calibrate the compass:
According above article you need to rotate the N97 around all axes in a continuous movement. It does not only take long but also looks strange. Now, there is easy and fast way to calibrate the compass within three seconds.
As you can see in the video, take your N97 with a flick of your wrist in the hand until the indicator changes its colour from red to yellow and finally to green. This usually takes just a couple of seconds. Now you are ready to come from A to B.

Direct download for Ovi Maps 3.0 without using Map Loader
Ovi Maps is the new name of Nokia Maps, and the old Nokia Map Loader is replaced by Nokia Maps Updater. With Ovi Maps on your mobile cell phone, you can take free maps worldwide, explore places you need nearby, and let Maps show you the way. On foot or in the car, Maps can direct you to your destination turn-by-turn, starting from right where you are.
This application is final version, many of the bugs that made the older beta test versions unusable have been fixed. There are still plenty of bugs left, but on most phones these won't be worse than the bugs that remain in the old Nokia Maps 2.0. Some features on Ovi Maps 3.0: weather, events, and movie info, faster zooming and panning, newer maps, and traffic info for North America. And the maps for India in Ovi Maps 3.0 are better than those of the old Nokia Maps.
Make sure to choose the right type of map. To check your version of Ovi Maps or Nokia Maps select "options" and choose "about" in Nokia Maps or Ovi Maps on your phone. Find your version of Nokia Maps. If this is not the right version for you choose another version here. Someone on the Nokia forum managed to fix a "map layers out of sync" problem by allowing the maps application to go online once. Should you face the same problem, this solution may work for you too.

Hard Reset for Nokia N97
Usually the performance of cell phone software that is causing the problems, can be corrected with a hard reset to fix issues. The hard reset is different from the soft reset. If the soft reset just restart the phone without affecting the file system or data that you have saved, not so hard reset. All data will be lost, before the hard reset, you should backup all important data.
1. Copy all contacts to mass memory for quick reinstall later, within contacts application:
a) Options \ Mark/Unmark \ Mark all
b) Options \ Copy business card \ To other memory
c) Select ‘E: Mass memory’ and ‘Yes’ to remove existing contacts from selected memory.
OR: You could use Backup in File Manager to copy Contacts, Calendar and Bookmarks to a memory card?
2. Other Application Data depends on what applications you have installed, have a look yourself and save on mass memory.
3. Goto Menu\Settings\Application mgr.\Installed apps. and uninstall all applications installed on the Mass Memory.
4. Hard Reset the phone my dialing *#7370# from the homescreen and entering Lock Code 12345.
Phone with now hard reset to the original firmware and factory settings. Once finished it will restart and ask you to enter region, date, time, etc. as if you just took the phone out the box when you first purchased it.
5. You now have a clean phone ready to load your data and install your applications back on, so this is the time you need to be careful what you do, where you install things and what you install.
6. Reclaim back phone memory before installing by uninstalling any firmware pre-installed applications you don’t use. Like removed Facebook, weather apps, most of the widgets. etc.. If you’re never going to use them, then get rid of them, you can always reinstall from OVI Store downloads page later.
7. Reinstall Phone contacts. Within Contacts application:
a) Options \ Copy business card \ From other memory
b) Select ‘E: Mass memory’.
8. Install all new applications to the Mass Memory, there might be a few apps which can only be installed on phone (Python & Wordmobi), but most should work okay installed on the Mass Memory. What applications to install is up to yourself. [gerrymoth]
