How to Setting Compass on Nokia N97

Nokia N97 has an internal compass is used to improve accuracy of determining the azimuth and helps the default mapping applications to automatically orients any map to the direction you are facing. Such compass can determine how a user is turned toward north direction. With geographical coordinates of a target point, the device itself (fixed by satellite navigation) and direction in which the user is turned, the device can determine direction in which the user should go.
Magnetic compass also reacts immediately to changes of direction when the user is walking. To check the status of the compass, go to the Maps view. In the right corner you can see the compass indicator.

  • When the compass is enabled, the circle around the compass is green, and the map view rotates automatically according to the direction to which the top of the device is pointing.
  • If the indicator is yellow, the accuracy of the compass is low.
  • If the indicator is red, the compass is not calibrated.
  • When the compass is not turned on, the circle around the compass is white, and the map view does not rotate automatically.

The compass should always be properly calibrated. To calibrate the compass:
  • Ensure that the device sensors are on.
  • Select Menu > Settings > Phone > Sensor settings > Sensors > On.
  • Select Menu > Maps.
  • The compass is active by default.
  • Rotate the device around all axes in a continuous movement until the calibration indicator changes its colour to green.
  • To turn off the compass, select Options > Tools > Turn compass off. Turning off the compass is only valid for the current session. When you open Maps the next time, it will be turned on automatically. Electromagnetic fields, large metal objects, and other external circumstances may reduce the accuracy of the compass. Never rely solely on the device compass.

According above article you need to rotate the N97 around all axes in a continuous movement. It does not only take long but also looks strange. Now, there is easy and fast way to calibrate the compass within three seconds.

As you can see in the video, take your N97 with a flick of your wrist in the hand until the indicator changes its colour from red to yellow and finally to green. This usually takes just a couple of seconds. Now you are ready to come from A to B.

Finnaly, how to use compass without default Maps application? ThinkChange release first app utilizing N97’s Compass Sensor to show you the NORTH!
How To Use:
  • Download and install
  • You need to "Calibrate" -- Rotate the device around all axes in a continuous movement to get a good signal before using, before you get signal strength GOOD or BEST, the data might be incorrect!

Direct download for Ovi Maps 3.0 without using Map Loader

Ovi Maps is the new name of Nokia Maps, and the old Nokia Map Loader is replaced by Nokia Maps Updater. With Ovi Maps on your mobile cell phone, you can take free maps worldwide, explore places you need nearby, and let Maps show you the way. On foot or in the car, Maps can direct you to your destination turn-by-turn, starting from right where you are.
This application is final version, many of the bugs that made the older beta test versions unusable have been fixed. There are still plenty of bugs left, but on most phones these won't be worse than the bugs that remain in the old Nokia Maps 2.0. Some features on Ovi Maps 3.0: weather, events, and movie info, faster zooming and panning, newer maps, and traffic info for North America. And the maps for India in Ovi Maps 3.0 are better than those of the old Nokia Maps.

Make sure to choose the right type of map. To check your version of Ovi Maps or Nokia Maps select "options" and choose "about" in Nokia Maps or Ovi Maps on your phone. Find your version of Nokia Maps. If this is not the right version for you choose another version here. Someone on the Nokia forum managed to fix a "map layers out of sync" problem by allowing the maps application to go online once. Should you face the same problem, this solution may work for you too.

Instruction:

  • Download Ovi Maps without Nokia Maps Updater [symbian underground]
Ovi Maps 3.0 for S60 3rd ed. Feature Pack 1 (N82, N95, etc., check this list of FP1 phones)
Ovi Maps 3.0 for S60 3rd ed. Feature Pack 2 (N78, N79, etc., check this list of FP2 phones)
    Ovi Maps 3.0 for S60 5th ed. (Nokia 5800XM, N97)
  • Run Ovi Maps on your phone once before you add any maps or voices. This will create the required folder structure on your memory card.
  • Unzip the downloaded map files and drop them into the appropriate folders on your memory card.
  • On my Nokia the folder structure is cities with a subfolder called diskcache, filled with 16 subfolders called 0 to 9 and a to f, and each of these folders have another 16 subfolders 0 to 9 and a to f.
  • Map files have the extension .cdt. Example:
    [memory card]\cities\diskcache\[0-9, a-f]\[0-9, a-f]\filename.cdt
  • On some Nokia phones (like the N95) maps are stored in:
    \Private\20001f63\diskcache\[0-9, a-f]\[0-9, a-f]\filename.cdt
  • To install, just drop the 16 folders called 0-9 and a-f into the diskcache folder.
  • If your phone has both folders, get a small map (for a single country) and try both folders to see which one works. Even Nokia's own map loader doesn't always get it right. Details on the Nokia discussion board.
  • You may need to tell your computer to show hidden files and folders

How to add Voices for all versions of Nokia Maps
  • Run Nokia Maps on your phone once before you add any maps or voices. This will create the required folder structure on your memory card.
  • If you unzip the voices, you'll get a folder with a name of the language. This folder contains an .xml file and a subfolder full of files without any extension. This folder should go into the cities folder.
  • For example, if you download english.zip, the unzipped folder (called english) goes into the cities folder on your memory card so you'll get:
    [memory card]\cities\english\etc.
  • On some Nokia phones (like the N95) voices are stored in:
    [memory card]\Private\20001f63\english\etc.
  • If your phone has both folders, try both folders to see which one works. Even Nokia's own map loader doesn't always get it right. Details on the Nokia discussion board.
  • You may need to setting your computer to show hidden files and folders.

Hard Reset for Nokia N97

Usually the performance of cell phone software that is causing the problems, can be corrected with a hard reset to fix issues. The hard reset is different from the soft reset. If the soft reset just restart the phone without affecting the file system or data that you have saved, not so hard reset. All data will be lost, before the hard reset, you should backup all important data.

1. Copy all contacts to mass memory for quick reinstall later, within contacts application:
a) Options \ Mark/Unmark \ Mark all
b) Options \ Copy business card \ To other memory
c) Select ‘E: Mass memory’ and ‘Yes’ to remove existing contacts from selected memory.
OR: You could use Backup in File Manager to copy Contacts, Calendar and Bookmarks to a memory card?
2. Other Application Data depends on what applications you have installed, have a look yourself and save on mass memory.
3. Goto Menu\Settings\Application mgr.\Installed apps. and uninstall all applications installed on the Mass Memory.
4. Hard Reset the phone my dialing *#7370# from the homescreen and entering Lock Code 12345.
Phone with now hard reset to the original firmware and factory settings. Once finished it will restart and ask you to enter region, date, time, etc. as if you just took the phone out the box when you first purchased it.
5. You now have a clean phone ready to load your data and install your applications back on, so this is the time you need to be careful what you do, where you install things and what you install.
6. Reclaim back phone memory before installing by uninstalling any firmware pre-installed applications you don’t use. Like removed Facebook, weather apps, most of the widgets. etc.. If you’re never going to use them, then get rid of them, you can always reinstall from OVI Store downloads page later.
7. Reinstall Phone contacts. Within Contacts application:
a) Options \ Copy business card \ From other memory
b) Select ‘E: Mass memory’.
8. Install all new applications to the Mass Memory, there might be a few apps which can only be installed on phone (Python & Wordmobi), but most should work okay installed on the Mass Memory. What applications to install is up to yourself. [gerrymoth]
